Who Is Eligible for a Child's NIN?
All Nigerian Children Are Eligible — From Birth
- Newborns — eligible immediately after birth registration
- Children aged 1–15 — full NIN enrolment with parent or guardian present
- Children born in the UK to Nigerian parent(s) — eligible as long as Nigerian citizenship is established by at least one Nigerian parent
- Teenagers (under 16) — same process, parent must still attend
There is no minimum age. If your child was born last week, they are eligible for a NIN today.
Why Register Your Child's NIN Now?
Many parents wonder whether it is worth registering early. The answer is clearly yes — here is why:
- → Nigerian passport for children — NIN is now required for children's Nigerian passport applications. If your child needs a passport to travel to Nigeria or for any official purpose, they need a NIN first
- → Future education access — JAMB (university entrance), NYSC and other education-linked services all require NIN. Registering early avoids a last-minute scramble
- → The process gets easier when they're young — younger children are simpler to enrol than teenagers who might push back on biometric capture
- → Family appointments save time — enrol the whole family in one visit rather than separate trips for each child
Documents Required for Child NIN Registration
⚠️ Parent or Guardian MUST Be Present
A biological parent or legal guardian must attend the appointment in person and remain throughout. Children cannot be registered without an accompanying adult. This is a hard NIMC requirement.
Documents for the Child
- ✓ Child's original Birth Certificate (NPC-issued if born in Nigeria; foreign birth certificate if born abroad)
- → Child's Nigerian passport — not mandatory for under-16 but brings it if you have one
Documents for the Parent or Guardian
- ✓ Valid NIN slip or NIN PVC card — the attending parent must have a NIN to register a child
- ✓ Nigerian International Passport (valid or expired)
- → If guardian (not biological parent): evidence of legal guardianship
Don't have your NIN yet?
If you (the parent) don't yet have a NIN, you need to register yourself first — or we can do both in the same family appointment slot. Adult NIN registration →
Step-by-Step Process
- Complete online pre-enrolment for your child
Visit penrol.nimc.gov.ng and fill out the pre-enrolment form for your child. Use your child's details (not yours). Print the slip with the 2D barcode and bring it to the appointment. Our team can help with this on the day if needed.
- Book a family appointment
WhatsApp or call us on +447450 444858. Tell us how many children (and adults) you're bringing so we allocate enough time. Family slots of 90 minutes or more can accommodate multiple children and adults in one visit.
- Attend with originals
Bring the child's birth certificate, your NIN slip, your Nigerian passport, and the completed pre-enrolment printout. Arrive on time — family appointments run to a schedule.
- Biometric capture
Our officer verifies documents and captures your child's fingerprints and facial photograph using NIMC-approved equipment. For very young children and infants, our officers are trained to adapt the biometric capture process — this is normal and your child will be guided through it.
- Transaction ID Slip issued
Your child's Transaction ID Slip is issued at the appointment. The NIN arrives via SMS within 1–5 working days to the phone number registered during pre-enrolment.
Registering a Newborn or Infant
Many parents are surprised to learn that newborns can be registered for a NIN immediately. There is no minimum age — even a baby born last week is eligible.
For newborns, you need:
- The baby's birth certificate (UK hospitals issue this — acceptable as the foreign birth certificate)
- The parent's valid NIN slip and Nigerian passport
- Both parents' NIN slips if both are attending (recommended)
Biometric capture for very young infants is adapted by our trained officers. Fingerprints may be limited for babies, but the facial photograph and initial registration proceed normally. The biometric record is updated as the child grows and their fingerprints become clearer.
What Happens When Your Child Turns 16?
If your child was enrolled for a NIN before the age of 16, their record must be migrated to a full adult NIN when they turn 16. This is a separate appointment and process.
- → The young person (now 16) must attend in person as the primary applicant
- → Bring the original NIN slip from the child enrolment
- → Bring Nigerian passport and Birth Certificate
- → A parent may attend but is no longer required as the young person is now 16
- → New biometrics are captured — fingerprints and facial photograph as an adult
When booking, mention "NIN migration at 16" so we allocate the right appointment type and time.

- ✓ We allocate extended time so there's no rushing
- ✓ Adults and children can be enrolled simultaneously by our officers
